A child was killed and 10 people were injured in a car crash near Kalkarindji that police believe involved alcohol and a large number of unrestrained passengers, NT Police said.

Detective Senior Sergeant Richard Musgrave said in a statement that about 11am yesterday, police received a report that a Toyota Prado carrying 11 people had crashed on Mardiyardu Road, between Kalkarindji and Lajamanu.

He said the 4WD was driven back into Kalkarindji, where it was met by a Care Fight plane.

“An 8-year-old child was declared deceased a short time later. The 10 other occupants, including the alleged 29-year-old female driver, suffered non-life-threatening injuries,” he said.

Snr Srg Musgrave said two crimes scenes were established, one at the crash site, and another at the vehicle.

“Communication from the scene was limited due to the remote location of the crash and Major Crash Investigators are currently on site at both scenes,” he said.

“This is a complex crash involving alcohol and a large number of unrestrained passengers that has tragically resulted in the death of a young child.”

Police are asking anyone with information to phone them on 131 444 or to visit their local station.

  1. Couldn’t really call that dirt track a road. Even grading does little more than level the sand traps and fill in the corrugations.
