A Tennant Creek man who was pulled over for suspicion of smoking marijuana had more than $5000 worth of illegal fireworks seized from his car on Tuesday night and issued a $1660 fine, NT Police said.

The 31-year-old man had gone to a local liquor store when a Point-of-Sale Intervention officer detected the smell of cannabis on him, police said.

He was pulled over after leaving the store and administered a roadside drug test, returning a positive result for cannabis. Police then arrested the man and searched his vehicle, discovering five suitcases full of fireworks and only a small amount of weed.

“We estimate this man was travelling with around $5000 of illegal fireworks,” said Superintendent Mark Grieve.

“Possession of fireworks became an offence at midday on Monday and we urge anyone who has unspent crackers to hand them in to police now or risk a substantial fine.

“This was great work by the Tennant Creek team, who followed their training and their instincts, and removed a large amount of illegal product from the streets.”

The man was charged with driving with a prohibited drug in his blood and possessing a schedule 2 drug – not traffickable.

He was also issued a $1660 fine for possessing the fireworks outside the approved period.
