A 14-year-old boy has been charged for stealing a vehicle in Alice Springs after handing himself into the police station, NT Police said.

Police director of communications Mark Wilton said that about 11am Tuesday, police received a report that a vehicle had been stolen by a male teen from a service station on Larapinta Drive.

“The vehicle was located a short time later abandoned at an address in Larapinta. Cash that was inside the vehicle at the time it was allegedly stolen had been removed and the offender had fled from the location,” Mr Wilton said.

Police said that after Strike Force Viper and Alice Springs general duties members officers began investigating the 14-year-old boy turned himself in at the Alice Springs Police Station and was arrested.

He was charged with theft, driving, riding, or using a motor vehicle without consent, and driving a motor vehicle while unlicensed, and was remanded in custody and was due to appear in court today.

Police said the stolen cash has not been found and asked anyone with information to phone them on 131 444 (quote reference NTP2500015325). It can also be reported anonymously by calling Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or through the website.
