NT Health has ordered a boil water alert for Batchelor and Adelaide River following heavy rains and flooding from ex-Tropical Cyclone Narelle that Power and Water says has “impacted the water supply system” in the communities.

The boil water alert follows existing alerts still in place for Umbakumba, Angurugu, Milyakburra, Numbulwar , Yirrkala, Gunyangara, Jilkminggan and Palumpa.

Health officials are recommending residents in the communities use cooled boiled water or bottled water for drinking, preparing food and baby formula, and brushing teeth.

“Public health safety remains the priority, and the alert will only be lifted when the Chief Health Officer is confident the water supply is safe to drink,” NT Health said in a statement.

Power and Water Corporation said it will check the water supply system and undertake repairs “when the weather allows”.

The government said Monday afternoon that minor flooding at Katherine Bridge was still possible overnight Monday into Tuesday morning due to the heavy rainfall from ex-Tropical Cyclone Narelle, with thunderstorms sill possible over the next few days.

A flood watch also remains current for parts of the Top End, while a flood warning was cancelled Monday afternoon. As of 2pm Monday, NT Fire and Emergency Services were reporting the following rainfall totals for Sunday:

• 4 mm was recorded at Upper Adelaide River in the 6 hours to midnight.
• 151 mm was recorded at Adelaide River Town in the 6 hours to 11:49 pm.
• 4 mm was recorded at Douglas River Research Farm in the 6 hours to 11:08 pm.
• 5 mm was recorded at Adelaide River East in the 6 hours to 10:15 pm.
• 115 mm was recorded at Howley Creek in the 6 hours to 10:15 pm.
