‘Attacked on an almost daily basis’: Two more cops allegedly assaulted in Alice Springs

Two more police officers have allegedly been assaulted in Alice Springs after a 16-year-old female “ripped a clump of hair” from an officer’s head and threw another to the ground during an arrest on Tuesday morning, NT Police said.

Officers were arresting a 19-year-old man inside a home on South Terrace just before 7am for an alleged unlawful entry, when police say the female who was also inside the residence “attempted to intervene and physically assaulted the two officers”.

“It will be further alleged the youth pushed one officer to the ground before physically assaulting the other officer and ripping a clump of hair from her head,” said Assistant Commissioner Martin Dole.

It’s the second incident of police officers being assaulted in Alice Springs since the weekend, when five officers were kicked, punched and spat on by an alleged offender during an arrest. One officer was treated for a concussion, while the others had to be tested for infectious diseases following the spitting incident.

The 16-year-old female from the most recent incident was taken to the Alice Springs watchhouse where police said she will be “dealt with” under the Youth Justice Act.

“It is outrageous that this person had no qualms physically assaulting two officers during an arrest, and it is beyond comprehension that our members are being attacked almost on a daily basis,” Mr Dole said.

“This behaviour towards police is simply not acceptable and will not be tolerated. Our members are not punching bags.”

The union representing police said yesterday the Gunner Government was not listening to their concerns about officers being assaulted in the line of duty and had delayed a “working group” examining assaults on workers.

“What is it going to take for the government to listen to our concerns?” NTPA president Paul McCue said yesterday.

“How many times do our officers need to go home injured before reform actually occurs?”
