Two men, one of them armed with multiple ‘edged weapons’ stuffed down his pants, were arrested after a car chase through Palmerston and Darwin resulted in a Toyota Land Cruiser catching on fire early Saturday morning in the northern suburbs, NT Police said.
Police in Palmerston were flagged down by a person reporting three men in a Toyota Land Cruiser were attempting to break into homes around 2am. Within 20 minutes, officers located a vehicle matching the description, but the driver allegedly refused to stop, sparking the pursuit.
Police chased the Land Cruiser down Kirkland Drive, onto Tiger Brennan Drive, and into Malak. The three occupants allegedly abandoned the vehicle on Kapok Court in Karama after it caught fire.
Police did not explain how the vehicle caught on fire.
Firefighters, who were called to the scene, successfully extinguished the blaze, police said.
An 18-year-old male, who allegedly had two large ‘edged weapons’ concealed in his pants, was arrested shortly after by officers, including from Strike Force Trident after cordoning off the area.
The male will be charged with weapons and alcohol-related offences, police said.
Police also arrested a 24-year-old male found hiding in the area, but he was released “pending further enquiries”, police said.
Another 24-year-old man was arrested at a home in Malak, who police believe to be the driver of the vehicle.
He is expected to be charged with multiple traffic offences, police said.
