NT Police are treating the second vehicle fire in Katherine in two weeks that caused residents to flee their homes as suspicious, but have refused to say whether they suspect the fires are connected.
Police issued a statement on September 26, in which they said they were seeking witnesses and implied suspected arson in connection to another car fire in front of unit blocks on the Victoria Highway just before 2am on Monday September 25.
However, police media made no mention on Thursday of whether they believe the Wednesday vehicle blaze that happened in the same area is connected to the previous one.
They also did not state whether they had made arrests in connection to the first incident or if the alleged arsonists are still at large.
The latest statement said emergency services were called to a vehicle fire at 10pm Wednesday night at “an address on the Victoria Highway” and that a “number of units” nearby were evacuated of residents, similar to the previous incident.
The fire was extinguished and no injuries were reported.
“The fire is being treated as suspicious and investigations are continuing,” Thursday’s statement said.
“Police are urging anyone who may have CCTV footage of suspicious behaviour in the vicinity of the Victoria Highway and Pearce Street, or has any knowledge of the circumstances, to contact police on 131 444. You can also contact anonymously through Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Please quote reference number 10482281.”
Questions to police about whether the suspected arson events were connected were not answered.
