A 44-year-old man who tested positive for methamphetamine was arrested after driving double the posted speed limit in a residential area around 8:45am Saturday, NT Police said, while two other vehicles were seized for engaging in an unrelated alcohol-fuelled street race over the weekend.

The 44-year-old man was allegedly driving 123km/h in a 60km/h zone on Gilruth Avenue at Mindil Beach when he was apprehended by police on Saturday morning.

Police said he returned a positive reading for methamphetamine and was charged with driving at a speed and manner dangerous to the public and driving with a prohibited drug in his blood.

He was bailed and scheduled to appear in Darwin Local Court on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, police arrested another man and seized two vehicles involved in racing on the Stuart Highway at Yarrawonga shortly after midnight Friday night.

“One driver was issued with a Notice to Appear for driving offences. The second driver tested positive for alcohol and was arrested at the scene,” said Sergeant Gregory Lamb.

“This is incredibly dangerous behaviour that put the whole community at risk and could have very easily ended in tragedy.

“As we come into the Christmas season, NT Police are reminding all motorists to be aware of the fatal five: speeding, fatigue, seatbelts, drink/drug driving and distraction.

“Anyone who witnesses dangerous driving is urged to contact police on 131 444 for any emergencies contact 000.”
