The Territory’s Power and Water Corporation and Alice Springs Council are pointing fingers at who should shoulder the cost for the urgent streetlights upgrade on the notorious Gap Road – a hot spot for many traffic fatalities – with no resolution in sight.
Gap Road in Alice Springs, considered one of the most dangerous roads in NT, has been the scene of three fatal hit-and-runs, domestic violence assaults, brawls, and the killing of domestic violence campaigner Kumarn Rubuntja in 2021.
Surely the council could get black spot funding for the lights. There must be some way of transferring funding from power and water to cover costs. They would need specialised staff and machinery to do the job or alternatively use a contractor.
