A 38-year-old man who allegedly exposed himself to a child near the Todd River and spoke to a “number of children” in an “indecent manner” last month has been arrested and charged, NT Police said.
It is alleged the man confronted the children on July 30 near the river and made the offensive comments. He then allegedly exposed himself to one of the young people.
“Police have been investigating the matter, which included identifying and locating a number of witness who provided corroborating information,” said Detective Senior Sergeant Toby Wilson.
“The man was arrested on Monday by general duties members.”
The man was charged with one count of indecent dealings with a child under 16 and three counts of attempting to procure a child under 16 for sex.
“This is absolutely disgusting behaviour and it is incredibly sad that children have been exposed to it. Many hours of police work have gone into corroborating statements that have now allowed us to formally prosecute,” Snr Sgt Wilson said.
“Unfortunately, this incident also highlights the importance of teaching children the protective behaviours of Recognise, React and Respond. Recognise an unsafe situation, react by getting away from the danger by making noise or running away, and report if necessary.”
Police said anyone witnessing suspicious behaviour should contact police on 131 444.
