A single-vehicle rollover that resulted in nine individuals being hospitalised with head injuries and fractures south of Tipperary Station on Saturday night is currently under investigation, NT Police said, with a five-year-old girl suffering a serious head injury in the crash.

The incident occurred around 5:40pm on Saturday, involving a canopied four-wheel-drive vehicle carrying 12 passengers, including the five-year-old child.

Following the rollover, nine occupants were transported to Royal Darwin Hospital by CareFlight, while two males and one female received medical attention at the scene.

Police said the driver of the vehicle tested negative for alcohol.

“When a vehicle this overloaded crashes, regardless of the cause, it is just pure luck that no one is killed,” said Acting Superintendent Erica Gibson.

“This behaviour was incredibly dangerous and irresponsible. It goes without saying that the maximum number of passengers in any vehicle is the same as the number of seats.”

Anyone with any information or dashcam footage regarding the incident is urged to reach out to the police at 131444 or contact Crimestoppers at 1800333000.
