More than 200 litres of grog was seized from a backyard seller in Alice Springs, resulting in unauthorised liquor selling charges against a 36-year-old woman, NT Police said, adding that the seizure will help reduce alcohol-related harm incidents in town.
Police said the woman had recently returned from South Australia in possession of 70 casks of wine and four bottles of liquor.
She was observed selling alcohol from her home in Larapinta on two separate occasions on Thursday by members of ‘Operation Saturitas’, a recently launched police taskforce to help combat a predicted spike in property crime and alcohol-related crimes over the summer months.
A search of the woman’s home was carried out earlier Friday with police seizing 54 casks of wine and three bottles of liquor.
The woman was issued with a Notice to Appear for two counts of unauthorised sale of liquor and will appear before the Alice Springs Local Court at a later date.
Superintendent Antony Deutrom said the seizure of the alcohol would contribute significantly to the reduction of alcohol-related incidents in Alice Springs.
“This is a considerable amount of alcohol to be removed from backyard sellers,” he said.
“What we can expect is a tangible reduction in alcohol-fueled violence in Alice Springs in the immediate future.”
