A young child has allegedly been sexually assaulted in Alice Springs, NT Police said.

NT government crime marketing manager Sita Bacher said in a statement police were investigating the alleged sexual assault of a young child in Alice Springs overnight. Police did not give the age of the child.

Ms Bacher said police received the mandatory report at 2:30am and started investigating immediately.

Police said investigations were in their early stages and further information will be provided when “deemed appropriate”.
