UPDATED: A 47-year-old worker at Newmont’s Tanami gold mine in remote Central Australia has died, the company has confirmed, while investigations are underway.
A Newmont spokesperson confirmed the employee died at the mine on Wednesday afternoon, due to an unspecified incident, now believed to involve the failure of a winch during a lift.
A company statement said “our thoughts are with the individual’s family, friends and colleagues during this very difficult time”.
