Four months after being hit by a learner driver’s car in a hit-and-run in Berrimah, a 40-year-old woman has died from injuries she sustained in the incident, NT Police said on Monday.

The woman was critically injured after being struck by the vehicle on the Stuart Highway near the intersection with Tivendale Road around 7:45pm on July 12.

Motorists found the woman and contacted police. They also helped provide details of a vehicle of interest.

Detectives later located a 17-year-old male at a Jingili residence where police also found a vehicle with damage consistent with the crash.

At the time, the 17-year-old was charged with hit-and-run, driving with alcohol in blood, driving unlicenced or uninsured and driving without a licenced passenger.

He was later granted bail.

Police said on Monday that the victim had remained in the hospital since the crash and died overnight Sunday from her injuries.

“The alleged offender, who was a youth at the time, remains before the court,” said Detective Senior Sergeant Brendan Lindner.

“He is facing numerous charges which will be upgraded in due course as a result of the death.”

St John Ambulance said at the time of the incident that the woman had suffered serious leg and lower body injuries as a result of the crash and that they suspected it would take a long time to heal.

Police did not say when the driver would be in court again.

There have been 47 deaths on NT roads this year.
