A woman was killed Saturday night after being struck by a vehicle on the Stuart Highway in Pinelands, NT Police said.

It brings the total number of lives lost on the road this year to 33.

At approximately 8pm, police received multiple reports of a vehicle hitting a pedestrian in the outbound lanes of the Stuart Highway.

The woman who was hit by the car suffered critical injuries and died at the scene, while the driver, who stopped to call emergency services and tested negative for drugs and alcohol, was not charged.

The highway was temporarily closed to establish a crime scene, but has since reopened.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing.

No further information was provided.
