A woman was killed on the Stuart Highway in The Narrows Monday afternoon during peak hour traffic after being hit by a bus outside of a bus shelter, NT Police said.

Police and emergency crews received a call of a crash involving a bus and pedestrian at around 5:30pm Monday. The 57-year-old woman was found dead when they arrived.

“A 57-year-old female was found to be deceased on the road. Police established road diversions to facilitate a crime scene pending arrival of investigators,” Detective Senior Sergeant Brendan Lindner said in a statement issued late Monday night.

“Detectives from Crime Division, including Major Crash detectives, attended to investigate the circumstances of the incident.”

Police gave no details of how the woman was struck by the bus, but said the driver “stopped immediately”.

Anyone with dash cam footage or who witnessed the incident while travelling along the Stuart Highway in The Narrows between 5pm and 5:30pm on Monday is being asked to contact police.

The inbound lanes of the road were closed and traffic diversions in place for most of the night.
