A 21-year-old woman has been charged with dangerous driving causing the death of a passenger following a fatal crash near Yulara on Friday.

The woman was interviewed by police in Alice Springs on Wednesday afternoon before being charged, police said.

The crash occurred around 4:00 am, about 445 kilometres from Alice Springs, involving a Mitsubishi sedan which rolled over several times killing a male occupant, who was thrown out of the car and died on the scene.

“The victim who was thrown out of the vehicle was not wearing a seatbelt,” Detective Senior Sergeant Brendan Linder said.

Police did not provide details of why they determined the woman should be charged.

The car’s other two female occupants, both in their 20s, were taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

“This crash resulted in the death of a 31-year-old foreign national who was living and working at Yulara,” Sergeant Lindner said on Wednesday.

“Major Crash detectives have spoken to the deceased man’s family and are assisting to facilitate the repatriation of his body back home to India.”

The woman was served with a Notice to Appear in Alice Springs Local Court on November 23.

The Northern Territory road death rate is four times higher than the national average.

In the first eight months of this year, the Territory has exceeded last year’s road fatality tally. The current death toll on Territory roads has already reached 44, higher than last year’s total of 35.
