NT Police are calling for anyone with information about a woman being assaulted by an unknown man near the Katherine Information Centre on Friday to contact them, but did not say if the assault was sexual in nature, and provided no description of the suspect.

In a statement, police said they located a woman near the info centre around 11pm on Friday night, who told them an unidentified man had assaulted her.

The woman was reportedly taken to the Katherine Hospital and “treated for non-life-threatening injuries”

“Detectives from the Katherine Criminal Investigation Branch are investigating the incident and urge anyone within the area between 10pm and midnight to contact police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Please quote reference number 10484445,” police said.

The NT Police executive and media team have a history of failing to report serious sexual assaults in a timely manner to the public.

The extent of the injuries the woman suffered in the latest Katherine assault were not released.
