A 39-year-old woman and a 7-year-old girl have died in separate crashes near Alice Springs and Maningrida on Sunday, NT police have said.

NT police spokesperson Rob Cross said police think that about midnight on Sunday a driver lost control “on a bend in the road” and crashed 160km west of Alice Springs. Mr Cross did not give more details on the location of the crash.

The driver and three children, aged 9, 10 and 16 were taken to Alice Springs hospital while the 39-year-old female passenger was confirmed dead at the scene, Mr Cross said.

NT police did not provide any information on the cause of the crash.

Mr Cross said that in another crash, which happened about 4pm on Sunday, a vehicle ran off the road and hit a tree 82km west of Maningrida in Arnhem Land. He did not say what road the crash happened on. There are no roads that run directly west from the town.

Two women and a 5-year-old child were taken to Royal Darwin Hospital and a 7-year-old girl died at the scene, Mr Cross said.

Police did not give a possible reason for the crash.

Mr Cross said the major crash investigation unit were travelling to the scene on Monday morning.
