All beverage containers with a capacity of up to 3 litres will now qualify for a refund under the Northern Territory Container Deposit Scheme from Wednesday, Environment Minister Josh Burgoyne has said.

The expansion follows recycling reforms passed in October, with the 10-cent refund now claimable on wine and spirit bottles, as well as larger juice and milk containers.

“Since the scheme began in 2012, more than one billion beverage containers have been returned through Territory depots, with more than $120 million paid back to Territorians,” Mr Burgoyne said.

“With fewer containers ending up in landfill and less litter in our public places, our government is delivering practical outcomes that make a real difference for everyday Territorians.”

Mr Burgoyne said there were more than 30 commercial collection depots throughout the Territory, extending into remote areas, along with fundraising donation points run by charities, community organisations, schools and sports teams.
