A Holtze prison corrections officer who lost an eye after having a crutch thrown at him was working alone at the time he was attacked by a prisoner who had not been properly classified for his threat risk, part of a wider problem of overcrowding and understaffing, prison insiders have said, but the Corrections Department insists prisoners are being properly classified.
The overcrowding at Holtze has also led to what one source described as Bali-like conditions, that has seen inmates sleeping on mattresses at the reception area, with cockroaches crawling over them, while creating unsafe conditions for corrections officers.
Its a sad state of affairs. The prison numbers and conditions makes it impossible to hide and deny reality. Billions thrown at solutions that have not worked. No end of victims the result of endless crime to the point that is now becoing normalised.
