Wangi Falls reopens for the Dry with a new crocodile fence to be installed

The iconic Wangi Falls has reopened for the Dry season earlier than anticipated and will see a new “crocodile deterrent fence” installed to replace the previous structure, the government said, in an effort to keep visitors and rangers safe.

The Litchfield National Park attraction welcomes approximately 200,000 visitors each year as the park’s most easily accessible swimming spot.

Wangi Falls was shut in 2023, after a two-metre saltie attacked a tourist, sending him to the hospital with back and arm injuries. Traps were set up at the time and further crocodile surveys were undertaken before being re-opened.

The new crocodile fence this year involves replacing the previous structure and will be completed during the season, the government said.

This year’s early reopening, ahead of the usual mid-June schedule, is being done to provide more time to use the attraction, which the government hopes will lead to increased tourism.

“Wangi Falls is a drawcard for the Top End, bringing in hundreds of thousands of visitors each year and supporting cafes, accommodation providers and tourism operators right across the region,” Parks and Wildlife Minister Marie-Clare Boothby said.

“With its twin waterfalls, natural plunge pool and easy access, Wangi is a must-visit, whether you’re after a swim, a scenic picnic or a weekend camping trip.”

The well-known Tabletop Track, which spans 39 kilometres, was also officially opened for visitors on Sunday, offering a multi-day walking experience through Litchfield National Park.

Top End Parks District Manager Andrew Turner stated that the opening of Wangi Falls resulted from a significant effort by rangers and the NT Parks and Wildlife.

“We hope visitors to Litchfield National Park enjoy this stunning spot for a swim,” he said.

KIN Coffee, Goods and Gallery and Hideaway Litchfield co-owner Vivienne Latham said numerous interstate and international visitors visit the park annually, visit the café, and stay at Hideaway Litchfield.

“Wangi is definitely a drawcard to the park for visitors and locals; almost always, we are asked when it opens.”

Litchfield National Park offers year-round access to nature walks, scenic drives, and 4WD adventures. While some areas may be seasonal, popular attractions like Wangi Falls, Walker Creek, and the Central Valley camping areas have recently reopened.
