A music, sport and well-being festival called Yidiyi will be held in the remote community of Wadeye for the first time, headlined by hip hop artists J-Milla and his brother Yung Milla.

Publicist Chryss Carr said J-Milla sounded the “wake-up call” from Wadeye back in June, in a TikTok livestream and an online campaign that had 689,000 views, with a message to show love for local people and communities, and which led to this first event in Wadeye to be held on November 3 and 4.

“My brothers and sisters in music and sport … come up here and show our love for our people, our communities. Connection and celebration is what our mob needs right now,” he said.

While traditional owner Stephen Bunduck said of Yidiyi: “We had a real hard time but now we are with one another again and we want to keep that spirit alive”.

Ms Carr said the event begins at midday Friday when AFL players, Shane McAdam from Adelaide, Jy Farrar from the Gold Coast, and Ash Johnson from Collingwood will hold a footy clinic.

From midday Saturday J-Milla will hold The J-Way workshop, giving his advice about becoming successful through hard work, creative storytelling and dream building.

He will tell participants how he rose from a troubled upbringing in Darwin into the music scene.

Ms Carr said another Saturday workshop called Beers To Spears, would be led by Kamileroi-Tongan singer Radical Son, and is a men’s shed sharing circle where he will share his own story of redemption.

While Larrakia rapper Kootsie Don will host the Strong Body + Mind with Girls, which will explore having a focused mind and body.

The music begins at 6pm with Kootsie Don, with music from her debut album, followed by Radical Son, with a preview of his forthcoming new soul album Bilimbayal (The Dreaming) exclusively for Wadeye ahead of its release in early 2024.

Headlining will be the collaboration between J-Milla and Yung Milla called the Bro Bro Show.

Ms Carr said YIDIYI aimed to earn its name as a cool place to come together through sharing fitness, knowledge, music, dance, stories and dreams, with the local Nangu Red Sunset Band and DJ Charly rounding out the day.
