Organisers of the Veteran Games are looking for competitors for its Darwin heats, which are back next month for the second consecutive year at Robertson Barracks.
Veteran Support Force managing director Heston Russell, who founded the games, said the event was developed from the findings of the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide, and connected veterans and serving Defence personnel to foster community and well-being, a sense of purpose, belonging and camaraderie often lost after leaving the service.
“Leaving Defence can mean leaving behind the team, the mission and the sense of purpose that shaped your life,” Mr Russell said.
“The Darwin heat is a great example of what can happen when the veteran and Defence communities come together around a common goal. It has grown significantly since last year, and this year every Defence unit at Robertson Barracks will be represented.”
Mr Russell said participants tackle physical and mental challenges, including obstacle courses and tug-of-war, to showcase their teamwork and problem-solving skills.
He said the winning team will receive a $20,000 grant from the NT government to represent Darwin at the Veteran Games on October 24 and 25.
Anyone who has served in the military is eligible to participate in the Veteran Games, including current and former personnel, whether from Australia or abroad.
The Darwin heat will be held on September 18. Teams can register at the Veteran Games website.
