Two youths, aged 12 and 16, were caught driving a stolen car around Palmerston Thursday evening, NT Police said, but it remains unclear if they will face charges.

The owner of the vehicle had reported to police that it had been stolen from his Bakewell residence after he left his house from around 3pm, NT Police Watch Commander Acting Senior Sergeant Andrew Caruana said.

The owner told the police he locked all doors in the house and left a spare key in an unlocked shed before leaving.

The youths appear to have found the keys and entered the victim’s house.

“The victim returned to his residence at about 9pm to find his sliding door has been opened, items removed from the house and his vehicle, keys and car stolen,” Sgt Caruana told ABC Radio Darwin Friday morning.

Police did not mention if there was anything else stolen from the house.

He said police on duty chanced upon the flagged vehicle during a nightly patrol.

“That evening, while police were conducting patrols of The Hub Palmerston, they’ve come across the stolen vehicle driving on Maluka Dr where it was apprehended,” he said.

“A 16-year-old male driver and a 12-year-old male passenger were apprehended by police.”

No charges were mentioned.

Sgt Caruana reminded Territorians not to practice leaving spare keys in and around the house when not home.
