A remote Territory mine site went into lockdown after two workers were injured following a group of unknown people breaking-in on Saturday morning, the company had said.

In a statement on its Facebook page mine owner South32 said that in the early hours of Saturday morning, about seven members of the public broke into the GEMCO mine site near Alyangula, on Groote Eylandt, causing damage and temporary disruption to the operation.
Superintendent Tanya Mace told the media the break-in happened about 2am, and one worker was threatened with an axe, while another was left with an eye injury. It is suspected the eye injury was caused by a some type of metal tool being thrown through a glass window.

She said the break-in was done by an “unknown group of offenders who had allegedly damaged property and fled the scene”.

The mine was shut down for a period of time with workers confined to a smoko room, while some non-operational staff were moved offsite.
