A woman who woke up to find two teens in her Moil bedroom at 4am with a knife was physically assaulted by the intruders as she hid under her blanket and cried for help, NT Police said.
Police said the two teens, aged 15 and 16, were later arrested and are facing charges.
The woman was asleep when the teens allegedly entered her room through an unlocked sliding door. She woke up and turned on the lights to find them in the room, with one of the teens holding an “edged weapon” demanding “money and jewellery”.
Police said the woman watched from her bed as the youths searched her room for roughly 10 minutes before stealing a coin jar and cash in US notes. She had pulled the blanket over her head and started to scream but was then allegedly struck “a number of times” through the blanket with the edged weapon, causing abrasions and bruising to her forearm.
Her screams were eventually heard by her housemates and the teens ran from the property.
“The woman’s housemate saw the offenders nearby the Moil residence and called Casuarina Police who responded to the incident and established a crime scene,” said Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Bland.
“Strike Force Trident members then door knocked the area, canvassed for CCTV footage that may have been recorded and reviewed police incidents from the night.
“The identity of the youths was established as a result and the pair were arrested later in the morning.”
Police later located the bank notes and the alleged weapon used in the attack following a search warrant being executed.
Police said the same youths had been captured on CCTV trespassing in another northern suburbs property and stealing alcohol from the premises earlier.
The 16-year-old, who was on bail at the time of the offending has been charged with aggravated robbery, aggravated unlawful entry, stealing, trespassing and youth serious breach of bail.
The 15-year-old is facing the four charges, but not the breach of bail offence.
Both were expected to face court today.
“This offence highlights the importance of keeping doors and windows locked overnight, even if there are people in the house,” Sgt Bland said.
