Two 18-year-old males have been charged in connection to a fatal crash in a stolen vehicle that occurred on Railway Terrace, Alice Springs last week, which killed another 18-year-old male in an incident that saw multiple youths leave the teen to die with no assistance after the crash.

Detective Senior Sergeant Brendan Lindner said the driver and one of the passengers of a grey Toyota Hilux dual cab utility were arrested over the weekend following “assistance from the community”.

He also said all occupants involved have now been identified.

“This has been a difficult investigation for police with a distinct lack of information initially forthcoming to detectives,” Snr Sgt Lindner said in a statement. “A young man was left to die on the road as everyone else in the stolen vehicle immediately fled without providing any assistance whatsoever.”

The driver was charged with dangerous driving causing death, hit and run causing death, and unlawful use of a motor vehicle, while the passenger was charged with a single count of unlawful use of a motor vehicle.

Both were refused bail and will appear in Alice Springs Local Court on Monday.

On March 8, at 2:00 am, the Joint Emergency Services Communication Centre received a report about the theft of the Toyota Hilux, registered in South Australia, from a caravan park on Palm Place, Ross.

The stolen vehicle was driven towards the Ross Highway through the park’s boom gate.

Around 3:40 am, the vehicle overturned and crashed while attempting a right turn onto Railway Terrace from Gregory Terrace, with a male passenger being thrown out of the window and rolled on by the vehicle.

CCTV footage showed eight males fleeing from the overturned vehicle in various directions.

St John Ambulance NT rushed the 18-year-old to Alice Springs Hospital but he died soon after.

“Investigations remain ongoing, and the community of Alice Springs can be assured that police have identified everyone involved,” Snr Sgt Linder said.

“Pending further consultation with the Office of Director of Public Prosecutions, further arrests and prosecutions are expected to follow.”

With the investigation still ongoing, police are appealing to anyone with information to make contact on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, quoting reference number NTP2400024119.
