A teenager and a man have been charged with being accessories after the fact to the alleged murder of Yiel Deng Gatluak on New Year’s Day, while police have said another man was to be extradited from Victoria to face court on a murder charge.

In a statement on Monday NT government crime marketing manager Sita Bacher said NT Police Criminal Investigation Branch detectives charged a 17-year-old boy and a 21-year-old man with being accessories to the alleged murder of Mr Gatluak.

NT Police had said Mr Gatluak’s badly injured body was found by a female driver around 12:30pm on Undoolya Rd, 10km east of Alice Springs on New Year’s Day.

Police had said in a statement on Sunday an application for the extradition of a 22-year-old man in Victoria was successful and he would be flown back to Alice Springs on Monday to appear before court on a charge of murder. The media unit did not respond to an inquiry as to whether that had happened.

A fourth suspect, a 20-year-old man, had been released while police investigated further.

On January 4 police impounded a 2017 black Ford Ranger Wildtrak – NT registration CE69 DM – in connection with Mr Gatluak’s death, which the agency said had been driven around Alice Springs from early morning until the early afternoon on January 1.

Police, however, said that the owner did not have the ute at the time of the alleged murder.

Anyone with any information, or CCTV and dash cam footage from Undoolya Rd between the intersections of Kurrajong Drive and Spearwood Rd between 10am and 1pm on January 1 can call police on 131 444, or contact Crime Stoppers anonymously on 1800 333 000 or through the website.
