El Nino declared amid unseasonal heat, strong winds
Australia has declared an El Nino weather phenomenon is underway as an unusual September heatwave sent temperatures soaring in the country’s southeast and led to the first total fire ban in three years, Aljazeera has reported. An El Nino generally causes drier conditions in Australia and is associated with extreme weather events such as cyclones and droughts. Australia’s September heatwave is expected to break with the arrival of a cold front with temperatures dropping back to their low 20s on Thursday.

Interactive Brokers Australia levied $538,000 for laxity in doubtful trading case
Interactive Brokers Australia Pty Ltd was penalized AU$ 832,500 by the Australian Securities & Investments Commission (ASIC) following the company’s failure to identify and respond effectively to suspicious trading activities conducted by one of its clients. ASIC found that the broker allowed an experienced trader to place orders aimed at increasing the closing price of an ASX-listed company stock, Orthocell Ltd. The client’s trading activities triggered 44 ‘marking the close’ alerts on Interactive Brokers’ surveillance systems between February 10 and October 13, 2021, Investing.com reported.

Victoria to tax Airbnb, Stayz
Victoria would charge a 7.5 per cent tax on income received by short-stay accommodation service platforms, such as Airbnb or Stayz, starting in 2025. It would be the first jurisdiction in Australia to adopt the measure. The amount raised from tax, announced as part of a strategy to combat the housing crisis in the next 10 years in Victoria, will be used for the development and financing programs of some 800,000 social and affordable homes, especially in its rural areas, La Prensa Latina has reported.

Investigation into Australian Bishop accused of child sex abuse launched
The Holy See is investigating a former Australian bishop after receiving a 200-page report alleging the bishop sexually assaulted four Indigenous youths and may have used hundreds of thousands of dollars in Church and charity funds in attempts to groom 67 others, the National Catholic Register stated. Former bishop Christopher Saunders of the Diocese of Broome, who is the subject of the investigation, stepped down from his role in 2020 amid sexual abuse allegations. The Vatican, which commissioned the independent report, received the findings in April but did not release them to the public.
