Social media companies could be forced to pay fines and compensate online scam victims under revised federal laws. The bill is set to be introduced in July. Sky News reported that it is the second phase of the government’s strategy to combat scams.
Indonesian fishing boats burned by Australian Border Force patrols
Dozens of Indonesian fishing boats have been set alight by Australian Border Force patrols in recent weeks to protect marine life from poaching, 1 News reported. More than 200 boats were seized, 48 sunk and 1000 fishermen apprehended in two operations in Australia’s north. Border Force has teamed up with the Indonesian navy to tackle the problem.

US military personnel arrive in QLD for Exercise Southern Jackaroo
US Marines and Sailors arrived in Townsville for a multilateral training exercise, which is taking place in Townsville Field Training Area, alongside the Australian Defence Force, Japanese Ground Self-Defense Force, Papua New Guinea Defence Force, and members from the U.S. Army to increase interoperability and readiness with Allies and partners, the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command has reported.

Shadow Health Minister seeks financial compensation after social media posting
QLD Shadow Health Minister Ros Bates is seeking $5,000 compensation for a video that overshadowed parliament for an entire week, Sky News has reported. Health Minister Shannon Fentiman uploaded a video which claimed Ms Bates yelled, “close your legs” during a parliamentary debate around maternity services but eventually, the captions were corrected to “cross your legs”. Premier Steven Miles stood by his Health Minister and unleashed at Ms Bates, labelling her “immature, mean, nasty and insulting”.
Three killed in WA shooting incident
Two women and one man have died following a shooting in WA on Friday, the Borneo Bulletin reported. WA police said emergency services were called to a home on Berkeley Crescent in Floreat, a suburb in Perth’s west. They responded to reports of a firearm being charged. It was found that a man in his 60s visited the property where he shot a woman in her 50s and a younger woman. He then took his own life.

Climate treaty between Australia and Tuvalu finalised
Sky News reported that Australia had finalised a historic climate and security treaty with the small Pacific island of Tuvalu. The island is at risk of becoming uninhabitable within the next century. New Zealand Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters recently visited the country to strengthen relationships and provide funding. The deal includes a provision of emergency support when major disasters hit the country. Foreign Minister Penny Wong also travelled to the country to finalise the climate and security treaty.
