Australia’s richest person, Gina Rinehart, was seen handing out food to campaign volunteers in NSW Planning Minister Anthony Roberts’ seat of Lane Cove early Saturday morning, The Australian has reported. Pictures posted to social media show Ms Rinehart at a polling booth in a white SUV adorned with Australian flags. The Liberals are worried they will lose the seat of Lane Cove, which the party has held since the seat’s creation in 1950. Mr Roberts is under threat from Climate 200-backed candidate Victoria Davidson. Ms Rinehart has an estimated worth of $37bn.

Sydney trains hit by widespread delays and cancellations on election night

Sydney’s train network has again been hit by service disruptions with trains not running on several lines due to urgent signal repairs, The Guardian has reported. Lines affected include the T1 (western line), T2 (inner west and Leppington line), T3 (Bankstown line), T5 (Cumberland line), T8 (airport line) and T9 (northern line) due to urgent signal repairs at Homebush. There are flow-on effects throughout the network with screens going blank at Milsons Point and Central stations.

South Australia unemployment drop to record lows

South Australia’s unemployment rate has dropped to a record low with more people at work than ever before, the government of South Australia said. Labour Force data released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics for February shows an unprecedented 936,000 South Australians are now employed, 4,400 more than in the previous month. Pleasingly, 614,200 are working full-time, another state record. South Australia’s unemployment rate has fallen to 3.8 per cent, the lowest it’s been since monthly records began.

PH miners to search partners in Australia

Twelve business persons from different mining companies in the Philippines will seek partners in Australia, the Philippine News Agency has reported. Australian Ambassador to the Philippines Hae Kyong Yu PSM said the business delegation will be joining the inaugural flight of Philippine Airlines from Manila to Perth. “Mining is one that we would be interested in exploring further and we already have fantastic Australian companies doing really good sustainable mining in the Philippines, like OceanaGold.” The mission will also focus on technology and discussions with Australian companies on mining rights and compliance in the mining industry in the Philippines.

Australia’s regional road deaths remain high

Australians in sparsely populated regional areas are about five times more likely to die in road crashes than those in urban areas, according to the peak body for Australia’s state-based motoring clubs, Care Expert has reported. The per capita road death rate for regional Australians in 2022 was 10.6 deaths per 100,000 people, while the corresponding rate for urban Australians was 2.24 deaths per 100,000 people. The rate of deaths was particularly heartbreaking in regional Western Australia and the Northern Territory, at 18.7 people per 100,000. A total of 1,193 people died on the nation’s roads in 2022, up five per cent from the previous year.

The blonde superstar singer appears to be getting set to announce her Down Under tour dates. According to the Shameless podcast, the 33-year-old is now scheduled to play more than one show at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. A Taylor Swift super fan leaked the news of the singer’s upcoming Australian shows to the Shameless podcast on Saturday, though no firm dates were released.
