UK PM Sunak unveils AUKUS subs plan
PM Rishi Sunak is in the US to meet with US President Joe Biden to announce the next step of the AUKUS nuclear sub program on Monday in San Diego, Bloomberg has reported. The US may base nuclear submarines in Australia or sell the country Virginia-class submarines in the interim. “In turbulent times, the UK’s global alliances are our greatest source of strength and security,” Sunak said in a statement. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning criticized the plan stating that the three countries should “do more things that are conducive to regional peace and stability.”

NSW premier liftoffs NSW Liberals’ election campaign
Premier Dominic Perrottet has launched the NSW Liberals 2023 election campaign with $1.2 billion to build and upgrade public schools across the state if his administration is reinstated, The Guardian has reported. He also pledged to set up a ‘future fund’ for every child in NSW once reelected. Mr Perrottet says the state is in a better place than it was when the government came to power more than a decade ago. He says: People are once again proud to say they come from NSW.

Repco Supercars champion secures first race win
Reigning Repco Supercars Champion Shane van Gisbergen has made history, securing the first race win of the Gen3 era, motorsport.org.au reported. The Chevrolet Camaro pilot started from fifth on the grid, but it wasn’t long before his Red Bull Ampol entry was back in familiar territory at the front of the field. The Kiwi used strategy and speed to power his way through the field, winning the race by more than eleven seconds.

Jazz legend Lynnette Irwin dies of cancer
Artistic director of Women’s International Jazz Festival and founder of Jazz Queensland loses her battle with cancer, the music has reported. Ms Irwin was the founder of the Brisbane International Jazz Festival as well as her label Pinnacles Music. She also founded Jazz Queensland in 1983. An in-demand artistic director and fierce advocate for women in music, Ms Irwin was also a driving force behind the Melbourne Women’s International Jazz Festival.

Rod Stewart in Australia
Rock legend Sir Rod Stewart kick-started his Australian concert tour in RAC Arena, Perth last March 11, Perth Now has reported. The seventy-seven-year-old icon said that this would be the last time he brings a “big rock show” Down Under. Cyndi Lauper is joining Sir Stewart on his Australian tour. The Rock N Roll Hall of Famer was forced to cancel his Australian tour at the beginning of the year due to the pandemic. The tour will have additional stops in Melbourne, Geelong, Adelaide, Mount Cotton, Sydney, and Hunter Valley and conclude at Centennial Vineyards in Bowral.

Inflation forces Maxibon to reduce portion size
Australians are distraught after Peter’s ice cream sandwich Maxibon is having its serving size reduced, Perth Now reported. Single Maxibon ice cream currently comes in a 102g serving, with the new size of the ice cream not yet known to consumers. “Tough times mean tough changes. And because of that, we’ve had to make the call to downsize our Maxibon a touch,” the company said in a post on Instagram.
