Albanese government slammed for ‘losing its way’
Opposition Leader Peter Dutton says he believes the Albanese government is “losing its way”, Sky News has reported. “There’s no Australian today who is better off than they were two years ago,” Mr Dutton said. “They are the masters of that inflationary environment. What we see at the moment is a government in chaos and their lurching from one disaster to the next.” He added, “I think it’s no wonder that Australians are starting to lose faith in a prime minister that they see as completely weak and incompetent.”

Military to recruit noncitizens to boost troop numbers
The Australian military will begin recruiting some noncitizens in a bid to boost troop numbers, Yahoo News reported. Only people from other members of the Five Eyes intelligence-sharing partnership who hold Australian permanent residency will be eligible. The move is part of a push to build a military that can resist foreign coercion through blocked trade routes in the future. Defense Minister Richard Marles said the change was a major step toward addressing a 4,400-person shortfall in the Australian Defense Force, whose target strength is 63,600 full-time personnel. The government intends to increase that number to 80,000 by 2040.

Brisbane is now the second most expensive city for housing
REA Group Senior Economist Eleanor Creagh says Australia has seen a “reshuffling in the ranks” of its most expensive cities, Sky News reported. Brisbane has become the second most expensive city for housing. “Brisbane home prices are now on par with Canberra as well,” Ms Creagh said. “It’s all driven by the divergent trends that we are seeing in home price growth across the country.”

P&O Cruises Australia to merge with Carnival Cruise Line
P&O Cruises Australia is slated to shut down and integrate into Carnival Cruise Line by early 2025, Travel and Tour World has reported. The move entails the exit of P&O Cruises’ Pacific Explorer from the fleet in February 2025, while the Pacific Encounter and Pacific Adventure ships will undergo rebranding and operate under the Carnival Cruise Line banner. Carnival chief executive Josh Weinstein acknowledged P&O’s esteemed legacy and dedicated team but cited escalating costs and the limited population of the South Pacific as factors prompting the decision to discontinue the brand.
