New law to prevent the construction of a Russian embassy near the Parliament building

The Australian federal government has passed emergency legislation to prevent the Russian Federation from building a new embassy near Australia’s parliament, the Jurist has reported. The Home Affairs Act 2023 cancels Russia’s lease of land in the Australian capital Canberra, citing risks to national security. Minister for Home Affairs and Cyber Security Clare O’Neil stated that Australia’s largest national security challenges are espionage and foreign interference, and the proximity of the leased land would present a substantial risk.

Global interest in Australia’s critical minerals on the rise

Foreign export credit agencies are showing a lot of interest in Australia’s critical minerals resources, looking to jump-start investment in new mines that are struggling to find finance, the Market Screener reported. Australia is the world’s biggest supplier of lithium and other minerals. However, Australian critical minerals projects are seen as high-cost, especially in a high-inflation environment. Apart from lofty power costs, Australia’s wages are among the mining sector’s most expensive.
