Wind, solar still the cheapest new build electricity generation

Renewable energy, particularly wind and solar, remains Australia’s cheapest new-build electricity generation despite a 20 per cent average increase in technology costs, the latest GenCost report revealed.  The report stated that technology cost pressures felt in Australia will revert to normal levels by 2027 but are delayed to 2030 in global scenarios where the speed of the energy transition is highest. It also said that batteries will play a crucial role in supporting both variable renewable generation in the electricity sector and the rapid expansion of electric vehicle deployment in transport,  Australian Manufacturing has reported.

ACEN ties up with Australia’s Aboriginal group to develop renewable energy

Philippine energy company ACEN Corp has tied up with Australia’s Yindjibarndi Aboriginal Corp to develop renewable energy projects in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, Reuters has reported. The ACEN-YAC partnership, known as the Yindjibarndi Energy Corp (YEC), would develop renewable energy projects with a total capacity of up to 3 gigawatts (GW). The initial goal is to have 750 megawatts (MW) of combined wind, solar, and battery storage under construction within the next few years. This would represent an investment of $1 billion.

Bonza makes its first network cuts months after launch

Australian low-cost start-up Bonza is to exit several domestic routes from August – its first network cuts since it began operations – citing the lack of ‘sustainable demand’. Bonza commercial chief Carly Povey said the airline is “[taking] a step back to allow our services to become more reliable”, as it eliminates five routes and trims frequencies on close to 20 remaining routes starting next month. The five routes to be cut are: Sunshine Coast-Coffs Harbour, Sunshine Coast-Port Macquarie, Sunshine Coast-Tamworth, Cairns-Mackay, and Toowoomba Wellcamp-Whitsunday Coast, Flight Global has reported.
