‘Golden visa’ arrangement for wealthy investors axed
Australia has axed its so-called “Golden Visa”, which granted wealthy overseas investors the right to live in the country, the BBC has reported. Designed to attract foreign business, it was cut in an immigration overhaul after the government found it was “delivering poor economic outcomes”. Critics have long argued that the scheme was being used by “corrupt officials” to “park illicit funds”. It will be replaced with more skilled worker visas.

New gas deals secured for East Coast energy markets
The Australian government had reached new gas supply deals for its east coast energy market, easing some concerns over long-term supply gaps as the country moves rapidly away from its dependence on coal-fired power stations. More than 260 petajoules of gas will be supplied through 2033 in two new enforceable commitments with Exxon Mobil’s Esso unit and Woodside under the government’s gas code rules, Reuters reported.

Severe cyclone to hit Queensland
A severe cyclone flanked by torrential rains is likely to hit Queensland, on Thursday, the Met Department said. It warned that a Coral Sea storm could become powerful enough to be declared a cyclone by Tuesday, which will dump heavy rains and a potential storm surge as it crosses the Queensland coast, Australia Broadcasting Corporation reported on Monday. The system could develop into a category one cyclone on Tuesday and reach category three strength by mid-week, the Anadolu Agency reported.

Turkish Airlines to launch flights to Australia
Turkish Airlines announced that it would begin its long-awaited services to Australia in March, Independent Online has reported. The move is expected to put downward pressure on airfares ahead of the European summer. The carrier will initially operate flights from Istanbul to Melbourne, with the flights conveniently relayed via Singapore, three times a week from March 16, this year. “Supported by the Victorian Government and Melbourne Airport, the new route will connect Türkiye with Australia’s largest Turkish community and one of the largest trading centres of Victoria,” the airline said.
