Premature deaths of homeless Australians unacceptable, Minister Collins said
The federal housing minister, Julie Collins, has described hundreds of premature homelessness deaths as “completely unacceptable” amid a sector-wide push for the establishment of a reporting scheme to shine a light on the crisis. The Guardian published the findings of a 12-month investigation of 627 homelessness deaths, finding a three-decade life expectancy gap and an average age of death of 44, and widespread systemic failings across the housing, health and justice systems.

PM Albanese and PMG leader Marape to meet on Thursday
Australia will roll out the red carpet to the visiting Papua New Guinea Prime Minister, James Marape, amid efforts to stall China’s security talks with the Pacific country. Marape is due to arrive in Canberra on Wednesday before he addresses a joint sitting of the Australian parliament on Thursday. Amid increasing competition for influence in the region, the Australian government will seek to build on the security agreement with PNG that Marape and PM Anthony Albanese signed just two months ago, The Guardian has reported.

Emirates to resume Dubai to Adelaide flights
Emirates is set to resume daily flights from Dubai to Adelaide starting October 28, 2024, Aviation 24 has reported. The daily service will facilitate travel demand and connect passengers to over 140 destinations in the Emirates’ global network. The estimated tourism expenditure generated by these flights is more than $62 million per year, contributing to an overall estimated expenditure of $160 million. The service will be operated by Emirates’ Boeing 777-200LR, offering 38 Business Class seats and 264 Economy Class seats.

Perth braces for second heatwave
Another heatwave is forecast for parts of Western Australia, just days after extreme weather broke records across the state. Preparations are underway across Perth for trains to slow down, tradies to down tools and school students to eat lunch indoors as the city prepares for its second heatwave in two weeks. Temperatures are forecast to reach 39 degrees Celsius on Thursday, peaking at 41C on Friday and Saturday, and remaining in the high 30s into next week, ABC reported.
