Queensland is investing $3 billion in rail line
The Queensland government is set to invest nearly $3 billion into building a rail line into the Sunshine Coast, Sky News reports. The rail line is considered a critical project. Premier Steven Miles has conceded the funding will only get the tracks as far as Caloundra for the Olympic and Paralympic Games, which are scheduled to take place in 2032. Brisbane’s final submission to the International Olympic Committee outlined getting the rail line to Kawana in time for the games.

PM Albanese pledges support as wildfires destroy homes
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese pledged to provide whatever support was needed to assist Victoria state in a days-long wildfire emergency that has razed homes after authorities warned extreme heat could fan the blazes this week, CNA reported. The emergency has killed livestock, destroyed six homes and forced more than 2,000 people to leave western towns and head to the city of Ballarat. “It’s a reminder of the need for us to be vigilant for us to continue to work and act on the threat of climate change,” Mr Albanese said.

Nuclear innovation program launched
The UNSW Nuclear Innovation Centre has been launched to advance Australia’s nuclear science industry, Sky News has reported. The program is supported by a $7.5 million donation from the Sir William Tyree Foundation, which will establish research scholarships in nuclear engineering and serve as Australia’s most extensive atomic engineering program. Defence Industry Minister Pat Conroy opened the new program.

New defence deal to be inked between Australia, Indonesia
Indonesia’s Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto and Australian Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Richard Marles have agreed to ink a new defence cooperation pact within the next two to three months, Tempo has reported. The cooperation agreement would be the most significant defence partnership in the history of relations between Indonesia and Australia. “In the near future, we plan to sign a defence cooperation agreement with Australia. We hope it can be completed and signed in the next two to three months,” Indonesian Defense Minister Subianto said.
