Law enforcement concerns over granting visas to Hamas supporters
Police sources have sounded the alarm bells over the possibility the Albanese government approved visas to Hamas supporters, warning relaxed security measures could put community safety at risk, Sky News reported. Immigration Minister Tony Burke’s office confirmed that the visas of 23 Palestinians were cancelled after they had been issued and when they were already en route to Australia. These Palestinians were understood to have had their visas cancelled when they were in other countries, such as Turkey or Egypt. Out of the nearly 3,000 visas granted, around 1,300 Palestinians have already arrived in Australia.
Australia enters into an MOU with Singapore on civil defence cooperation
Australia is strengthening its preparedness for natural disasters with a new Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) ahead of the 2024-25 High-Risk Weather Season, Asia Pacific Defence Reporter has stated. The MOU provides Australian communities additional reassurance and support should disaster impact them. National Emergency Management Coordinator-General Brendan Moon and Commissioner SCDF Eric Yap Wee Teck signed the MOU in Singapore last week.

Northern Territory Election: CLP wins big with a massive swing against Labor
The Country Liberal Party has defeated Territory Labor in an election landslide that has seen Lia Finocchiaro elected the first female CLP Chief Minister in the Territory’s history, The NT Independent reported. The swing against Labor was certainly on across the Northern Territory, but nobody expected it to be as large as it was, which was in the double digits and more than 20 per cent in some electorates. CLP Leader Lia Finocchiaro was delayed in making her victory speech by party president Shane Stone, who took to the stage ahead of her to bask in the election victory and thank the party’s good old boys and the campaign team for contributing to the win. When she finally took the stage, Ms Finocchiaro told Territorians her party’s success was “a victory for hope and opportunity for every single Territorian”.

Jim Chalmers is ‘not a good Treasurer, says Deputy Opposition Leader Sussan Ley
Deputy Opposition Leader Sussan Ley has criticised Treasurer Jim Chalmers for “not” being a good treasurer as he is “not focused,” Sky News has reported. New figures show three out of four Palestinian visa applications have been rejected in the wake of the Coalition’s pushback on the issue. “Jim Chalmers—where should his focus be?” Ms Ley said. “He calls himself a good communicator; he’s not a good Treasurer. With 12 interest rate rises under this government and the cost of living biting so hard everywhere …, it tells me the Treasurer is so not focused on his real job. Can he just do that?”

Extreme wind, hail, and storms expected in parts of southeast Australia
9 News reported that Australia’s south-eastern cities should brace for an unreasonable deluge of storms, hail, and strong winds. The Bureau of Meteorology said an intense blast of warm conditions is set to break temperature records across the country, with the weather systems moving across the southeast expected to impact conditions. BOM said some parts of central Victoria, Melbourne, and NSW should expect “severe” thunderstorms. “But it will also spill over into southern NSW, parts of the Riverina. In those severe thunderstorm areas, we could see widespread damaging winds, large hail… heavy rainfall is possible,” senior meteorologist Miriam Bradbury said.’
