Three Territorians, including an eight-year-old girl, have been treated after being bitten by snakes overnight, St John Ambulance said.

NT operations manager Craig Garraway said an eight-year-old girl from Nhulunbuy was rushed to hospital after she was bitten by a snake which jumped out from underneath a fridge when she went to open it, and latched on her toe.

He said her parents were able to capture the snake, but he was uncertain if the snake venomous.

“The parents have been able to capture the snake and put it in the pillowcase and took it to the hospital, where the young eight-year-old girl was being treated last night, so I’m unsure of the actual outcome there,” Mr Garraway told the ABC Radio Darwin on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, in Tennant Creek, a snake wrapped around the leg of a 45-year-old man and bit him.

“It’s bitten him and he felt unwell. Paramedics have treated him and took him up to the Tennant Creek Hospital for treatment and he was receiving treatment last night as well.

“No idea on that snake but they do have a lot of big king browns down there and quite a lot of venomous snakes are in the Tennant Creek area, so it’d be concerning,” he said when asked if the type of snake was identified.

Meanwhile in Nightcliff in Darwin, paramedics also attended to a 25-year-old man who was bitten by an unspecified snake.

“He was taken to Royal Darwin Hospital for testing and to ensure that it wasn’t venomous, and he didn’t have any after effects.”

Mr Garraway said the three snake bite incidents so close together was a bit bizarre and “not something he have come across before”.

“I’m assuming the [heat] range probably contributing to that,” he said.
