Three men allegedly involved in a “vicious attack” at the Casuarina bus interchange in March that led to a 48-year-old man dying two months later from his injuries have now been charged with murder, NT Police said Tuesday.
The alleged assault occurred on March 12, with four offenders allegedly knocking the victim, later identified as Martin Wiberg, to the ground before stomping on his head, police said at the time. Mr Wiberg was taken to Royal Darwin Hospital with serious head injuries, but succumbed to the injuries two months later in June.
Two 19-year-old males, a 26-year-old male and a 30-year-old male were arrested at the time. But on Tuesday, police said three of the men, including one 19-year-old and the other two men, have been charged with murder.
Detective Senior Sergeant Paul Morrissey said in a statement that police referred a brief of evidence to the Director of Public Prosecutions seeking to have the charges upgraded from aggravated assault to murder, which the DPP accepted.
The three men have all been charged with one count of murder.
“Our thoughts remain with the family and loved ones of this man as they continue to endure an unimaginable loss,” Snr Sgt Morrissey said.
“This was a vicious attack and the level of violence displayed was reprehensible and has no place in our community.”
The 26 and now 31-year-old will appear in Darwin Local Court on June 10, with the one 19-year-old man due to appear on August 12.
