Two men were killed when the van they were in crashed and caught on fire at Jabiru, while a female pedestrian was killed at Nhulunbuy.

Detective Senior Sergeant Brendan Lindner said in a statement that on Thursday a Toyota van crashed and caught fire on the Arnhem Highway adjacent to Jabiru. He said a disaster victim identification team were working with pathologists and the Coroner’s office to formally identify the deceased who are believed to be two men from Darwin, aged 27 and 30.

Another passenger, a 20-year-old man, escaped from the van before the fire and suffered non-life threatening injuries.

Snr Sgt Lindner said a 29-year-old woman was also killed after being hit by a Holden ute on Melville Bay Road near Wallaby Beach at Nhulunbuy on Good Friday.

He said the 25-year-old driver stopped on the scene, assisted the victim, and called 000 but the victim was declared dead by paramedics a short time later.

Detectives are calling for anyone with dashcam footage, or who saw any pedestrians along Melville Bay Rd to contact police. No charges have been laid against the driver, who tested negative for alcohol.

“Sadly, 18 Territorians have lost their lives on our roads in the first three months of this year, and it is believed that 95 per cent are linked to alcohol or drugs,” said Snr Sgt Lindner said.

“We are imploring Territorians, whether you are a driver or a pedestrian, if you’ve been drinking or taking drugs – stay off the road.”
