Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro’s comments in Parliament that 45 paediatricians who voiced concerns about the treatment of children in youth detention should stop “wasting” her time and go back to “look[ing] after sick children” have been condemned by the Australian Medical Association NT, which said the doctors need to be taken seriously “if the government wants to provide quality healthcare to children in the NT”.
Ms Finocchiaro was responding to a question posed by Greens Member for Nightcliff Kat McNamara, who asked her if she would be listening to the 45 doctors who sent her a letter asking her to reconsider her proposed changes to the Youth Justice Act and ensuring medical care for incarcerated children.
She said it with a straight face and a 5 o’clock shadow.
Neither flinched.
This is too big a job for LiaR, it’s clear she doesn’t have the emotional intelligence nor the understanding to show real leadership.
And she certainly doesn’t have the right people in her Cabinet. Or halfway decent advisors.
