Four teens who allegedly went on a crime spree around the Greater Darwin region over the weekend, involving stolen vehicles and alcohol have been arrested, NT Police said, with two of them facing charges and another two being dealt with under the Youth Justice Act.
Police allege the teens first stole a Toyota Land Cruiser around 1:20am on Sunday from a business on De Latour Street in Coconut Grove, where a security gate was rammed and extensively damaged.
Shortly before 6am, a business on the Arnhem Highway in Humpty Doo was broken into and a quantity of alcohol stolen.
Then, later Sunday night, back in Coconut Grove and Nightcliff, two businesses were entered where alcohol was taken, as well as two more vehicles being stolen with damage caused to another gate.
At midday on Monday, detectives located one of the stolen vehicles travelling along Casuarina Drive but it was driven to Aralia Street with “a number of persons fleeing the vehicle into nearby mangroves”, police said.
The dog unit was deployed and four teens aged between 13 and 16 were arrested.
“These arrests were the result of a momentous effort from frontline police members. NT Police will continue to target property offenders who disrupt hard working members of our community,” Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Bland said.
“Anyone who witnesses these sorts of incidents, or who has information regarding this specific offending, is urged to contact police on 131 444. You can also report anonymously through Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.”
One 16-year-old was charged with three counts of stealing, three counts of unlawful entry, three counts of damage to property and one count of aggravated unlawful use of a motor vehicle. The other 16-year-old is facing similar charges.
Police said the 13 and 14-year-old “will be dealt with under the provisions of the Youth Justice Act”.
