A 16-year-old male has been arrested for assaulting two police officers while trying to escape custody in Tennant Creek, NT Police said.

An attempted arrest by police around 3:55pm led to a confrontation that escalated into a physical struggle, during which two officers were allegedly assaulted as the suspect resisted arrest and fled on foot, police said.

Neither officer sustained serious injuries.

Police did not explain what they were arresting the teen for in the first instance.

Following the escape incident, general duties police launched an investigation and were able to locate the suspect at a residence in Tennant Creek. At approximately 4:20 pm, he was arrested without further incident and taken to the Tennant Creek watch house for processing.

The suspect has been charged with two counts of assaulting police, trying to escape custody, and property damage.

“Assaulting a frontline worker who is trying to serve and protect their community is disgraceful. I am thankful that no one was seriously injured, and the offender will face court for his actions,” Superintendent Katie Hatzismalis said.
