The most boring Territory election campaign in recent memory may have a bit of life breathed into it yet, as high-profile Alice Springs businessman, anti-crime campaigner and Action For Alice administrator Darren Clark says he is eyeing a run as an independent.
Mr Clark told the NT Independent he feels compelled to seek office after seeing first-hand the damage both major political parties have inflicted on the Territory by its members toeing the party line, rather than taking action on behalf of citizens to fix the Territory’s problems.
“Labor have failed the Territory and the CLP have missed all the free kicks given to them and have failed to provide a decent, viable alternative,” Mr Clark said.
“I think by now, everyone knows I speak my mind and call people out.
“I’ve watched some local members here and they’re puppets, lacking the spine to speak out and get protection for their constituents.
“It seems as though many are only in it for the salary and not for the people. Territorians are desperate for someone to take people with them. So, for all these reasons I’ve mentioned, that is why I would run.”
He added he is looking at the Alice Springs electorate of Braitling, currently held by the CLP’s Josh Burgoyne, because Alice Springs has “become an afterthought” for the parties, he said.
Mr Clark is known for getting results.
His popular Facebook page Action For Alice has been unnerving the police brass for years with its unauthorised and confronting daily reporting of crime in the troubled town, that was widely credited with forcing Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to visit early last year to announce hundreds of millions of dollars in funding to combat the ongoing crime crisis, undermining the NT Labor Government’s denials and repeated lack of action.
Mr Clark has also taken a hands-on approach to combatting the social issues in the town by providing employment opportunities to at-risk youth through his business Wicked Kneads bakery.
The Facebook page has also foiled the government’s, and the NT Police executive’s, ongoing public narrative of how they will fix the crime problem in Alice Springs by exposing their shortcomings and making public the mistruths reported by the authorities in their effort to placate the public.
He acknowledged the social media page could be an asset for an independent politician to provide unfiltered information of parliamentary conduct back to the public.
“Using Action For Alice 2020 alongside my efforts to [hold politicians accountable] could be a very good combination for the people, and let’s face it, not many members fight hard enough for their constituents,” he said.
“The system needs a serious shake-up. Too many lies, too many cover-ups; politicians need to be held to account.”
Political pundits have suggested the August 24 election could return a hung Parliament, meaning neither major party wins enough seats to form government. That could result in independents playing a crucial role supporting whichever party seeks to form a minority government, holding out for inducements that could directly lead to real change that the party political system has failed to provide to date.
“Independents not bound by a party can speak out to hold [the system] to account without a party silencing them,” Mr Clark said.
“If independents hold the balance of power, they could demand real action from the party needing their vote and not provide support until that action is signed off on.”
Nominations for the August 24 NT general election close on Thursday at noon.

but isnt that ‘popular facebook page’ a hate platform? it routinely hosts racist lies. it provides a safe haven for those who threaten violence. I agree that crime should be taken seriously, but I don’t believe the baker’s platform does this. I understand why his outlet is popular, but I do not endorse it as a resume for a representative.
Justin, whats the name of the other person who has been very vocal about the woes of alice springs and rocked the boat about it?
Hi Scott. I do not deny that he’s been vocal and rocked the boat.
I just find mr walsh’s glowing endorsement a bit hard to swallow, given the well documented downsides of mr clark’s publishing of any negativity, regardless how untrue or ugly.
but I mean, good on him for speaking up, I hope that as a candidate he does so more responsibly.
I also find it weird that mr walsh doesn’t seem to be aware of the massive change already happening in this election. Far from being “The most boring Territory election campaign in recent memory”. I’m finding lots to be interested in. case in point, Justine Glover in Karama. There we have an example of a real independent, highly capable, championing the problems of residents besieged by unruly visitors – without indulging misinformation and hate.
Darren Clark has certainly been very vocal and has brought a lot of necessary attention to the shocking situation in Alice Springs. I’ve read his page, which I believe are accounts of break-ins, riots etc sent directly to him by frustrated residents. For all the media attention he has received I’ve struggled to find him offering possible solutions.
At least Darren & Robyn Lambley call out the CRAP that we are forced to endure here in the Alice.
It’s time for candidates who really care about their NT constituents (voters).
Worst JOBS JOBS JOBS 2016-19 ALP NT Treasurer NICOLE MANISON will walk away with impunity after increasing 2016 NT $1.6b debt to $8b 4 years later. Politicians should have accountability as her laziness and lack of qualifications has seen our homes devalued, private business close & NT Major Projects all fail.Anyone surely could improve the standard?

Josh has been a very effective hard working local member, he has my support .
This move is a ruse by the CLP to get more votes for Josh to shore up his re-election. The Greens must have the CLP worried.
I’ll bet Mr. Clark nominates Josh as his first preference so that any votes Mr. Clark might otherwise secure will automatically flow to Josh as a preference vote once Mr. Clark is knocked out of contention.
Josh has been performing very well across the electorate and in the parliament as a neophyte local member for Braitling over the past 4 years. He’ll be difficult to unseat.
