NT Police are searching for one of the occupants of a stolen car that crashed into another car in Darwin City after running a red light and fleeing the scene just before 8:30am on Sunday morning.

Police said they had engaged in a “short pursuit” along Chung Wah Terrace in Palmerston before ending the chase “due to safety concerns”. However, an hour later the stolen car was involved in the crash at the intersection of Daly and McMinn Streets.

A civilian who witnessed the collision detained the driver of the stolen blue Isuzu after the collision, near the scene until police arrived and arrested him. However, a second occupant fled on foot, police said, and is being sought.

The driver of the other vehicle, a Toyota C-HR, was attended to by emergency services and taken to Royal Darwin Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Investigators from Strike Force Trident are investigating. They provided no details about the man they arrested or a description of the man they are seeking.

“The same stolen vehicle had been seen in Palmerston about an hour earlier and police had engaged in a short pursuit on Chung Wah Terrace before terminating due to safety concerns,” said Duty Superintendent Jamie O’Brien.

“Police in both Darwin and Palmerston were monitoring the road network for the vehicle.”
