A new youth festival will be held in Alice Springs to mark the conclusion of NAIDOC Week, featuring live music from local talent alongside a national headline act, organisers have said.

Alice Springs Town Council chief executive officer Nicole Battle said the free, all-ages Newlandia Youth Festival was being run by the Tangentyere Council Aboriginal Corporation and would feature skate demonstrations, competitions and food vendors alongside live music.

“Newlandia is about celebrating young people, celebrating culture and creating something genuinely exciting for our community,” Ms Battle said.

“The Newland Skate & Play Precinct was built to be more than just a piece of infrastructure, it was always intended to be a place where young people could connect, express themselves and feel a sense of belonging.

“Newlandia brings that vision to life in a big way and we’re proud to be delivering it in partnership with Tangentyere Council as part of NAIDOC Week.”

Tangentyere Council CEO Walter Shaw said Newlandia would create a positive space where young people feel seen, connected and empowered through music, movement, creativity and culture.

“Tangentyere Council remains committed to supporting strong communities, cultural identity and opportunities for young people to thrive, while continuing to celebrate the voices, leadership and contributions of Aboriginal people across our communities,” Mr Shaw said.

Ms Battle said the event will be held on Friday, July 10 at the precinct and Jim McConville Oval, with the full program and music lineup to be released shortly.
